Our Thoughts on Flowers…
We see floral design as an intentional collaboration between you, us, and natural world, and this alignment brings with it a series of local and global considerations.
Flowers are rooted in place. They are living beings with their own needs, lands, seasons, and caretakers. We take this understanding seriously through our work with local farmers, and our limited use of imported flowers. We have always been committed to working with local growers who care deeply for the flowers we choose to work with. But supporting local growers, and relying on their wealth of knowledge, isn’t possible throughout the year in Canada.
Since flowers depend on seasons, climates, and lands, we are acutely aware that Canada is not a hospitable environment year round. Our cooler temperatures means Canadian florists often have to rely on imported flowers throughout the year. There are also gorgeous flowers, who we all know and love, that simply don’t grow from our soils. All of these factors culminate in us, as florists, being called to ask ourselves: where are our flowers coming from, if not Canada?
We have few projects in the works aimed directly at reducing, or changing, our relationship with the current version of the imported flower industry. We also recognize that structural harms are often reflected similarly at home, and that the majority of the flowers we use are grown and harvested from the traditional, unceded, and unsurrendered territory of the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation. We are committed to continue educating ourselves on the histories and contemporary calls to action made by those who hold valuable knowledge of, and an irreplaceable relationship with, the land we both inhabit and work with.
Flowers are wonderful little creatures with stories to tell us about each other and the world. They are quietly present in our lives, moving us through love, loss, healing, and celebration. We adore them, and want to work with them for as long as they’ll have us. But our work is not only motivated by our love of flowers, design, and the natural world, it is also fueled by the opportunity for connection flowers invite into our lives. We will always be grateful for our part in helping bring a small moment of beauty to your life.
In collaborating with us, you can rest assured that the flowers you receive have been crafted by thoughtful, knowledgeble hands. Ones who see floral design as an intentional act between yourself, us, the natural world, and the efforts of those both in and outside our borders. We are honored to do the work we do, and plan to continue growing our knowledge of the social, cultural, and environmental impacts of floristry.
